As he learns about her "true colors" he doesn't seem crushed, only mildly dismayed. The final 10 minutes of twist, twist and re-twist were all flash and no substance. The final twist has us believe an FBI agent allows 3 innocent people to be killed 2 of them police the precinct house , to keep his cover, THEN exposes the "Suspect". That was a tiring 90 minutes! Never Heard of it, gave it a chance on TV.. Seven out of Ten as some things didn't stack up. Highly amused at the comments about when did Jolene Black turn black..
T'Pau from Voyager?? No one watches that then? Still, film very good. A channel showed it last night and straight away i was 'caught' by the intro music.. I notice many queries about the music used, nothing more irritating to find out they used a special mix. Very dark film.. So, keeps interest. But no real clues as to what IS truth. Well worth the watch but don't expect answers. Music good, there's a list of it somewhere, but..
So yes.. I'll watch. Voyager gave her more exposure.. LL J was in a few films, this one Then again.. Just to be 'cool'.. I think Isaac Hayes played a better character in what he's done.
Yes, I'm a Brit. Oh , look at me. My eyes are rolling. Rather than use any intellectual energy, the clueless feel that the only way to summarize a movie, is to compare it to another movie. Let's see, the documentary reminds me of "the Holocaust". Instead of Jews, there are migrant Hispanic workers. Instead of Germany, it's California.
Instead of Hitler, there's the former-lieutenant governor, Gray Davis. Instead of concentration camps, there are lines at the DMV. See, almost the same. For dolts, any movie with a twist and characters "aren't who they seem to be" It keeps you guessing, and that really upsets many movie goers. It certainly upset a lot of people who posted on this forum.
Lots of discussion of why a white woman was used, rather than a black woman. If a black woman was cast, it would have been a different movie. I prefer Chinese women and, if Zhang Ziyi was cast, it would have been a different movie. For a mixed-race actress, Jennifer Beals would have been perfect. Many good reviews, comparing this to great films with complex plots. Nobody mentioned "The Sting," a movie that for sure stung me.
So did "Slow Burn. And of course, the twisted plot. For me, not too complicated to follow and be happily stung. The characters are intriguing, capable of creating empathy and suspension of disbelief. Ray Liotta is at his serious, intense best.
Jolene Blalock is utterly beautiful, with slick sexy acting chops too. Check out the online musical tribute to her - breathtaking photos.
My advice - watch it and form your own opinion. This was quite honestly one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I bought it at Blockbuster expecting very little from it. I mean, the reviews on it weren't great, it wasn't a big money maker and it wasn't syced up either. So I figured it would be middle of the day, watch it just to pass time type movie I was supposed to be doing homework while I was watching it.
I turned my laptop off 2 minutes into the movie. There was plot turns from beginning to end, good acting, pretty lady constantly naked. I mean, it was an all around movie. True, it had a bit much nudity for my taste, but still, it never took away from the movie. Nobody was ever naked for the sake of being naked. Watch it!! It's not like the garbage thats over hyped now a days. I must say I just finished watching this movie, and what a waste. I agree this movie had some great actors Ray Liotta , and a decent plot.
However, I lost interest in this movie after a while and was just waiting for it to end, and did not really care how it ended. The usual suspects ripoff was evident in that there was a crime lord, in this case a Danny Ludden, as compared to the Kaiser Sosa of Usual Suspects who nobody had ever really seen.
Yeah right. This movie tried to tell us that the Danny Ludden character owned property all over "the city", which they slipped and called Detriot once, and controlled a gang that ran Detroit, and no one had ever seen him. Wow, this is an amazing concept. Is the viewer to believe that in this day in age in the US there can be an Assistant DA in a city like Detroit who is using a false identity and no one catches this?
Oh well, don't waste your time, watch the Usual Suspects for a decent movie with a good plot. I had not heard of this movie when me and my friend picked it up at Blockbuster. It was between this and Be Kind Rewind and fortunately we chose this movie. Ray Liotta plays a district attourney running for mayor when his DA is raped by a supposed psychotic music store clerk and then murders him. Liotta is taken on a roller coaster of a mystery where you don't know who is telling the truth and if everyone is who they say they are.
There are so many twists and turns that it becomes confusing at points but it all adds up to the ending which relieves your confusion. I haven't heard of Jolene Blalock but she is excellent in her role as the supposedly raped was she or wasn't she? DA who may have some tricks up her sleeve. The only thing i had a problem with was some of the dialouge. C- 1 hr. Sign in. Forgot your password? Get help. Password recovery. Movie Reviews. Writer-director Wayne Beach has constructed a rather interesting maze of mistaken identities, elusive strangers, and blurring the racial barrier.
Both of those pictures showed signs of becoming something more than they were, but it was probably the direction that really did them in. In Slow Burn , Beach decided to make his directorial debut and try to overcome what has plagued him in the past. Sometimes you just have to do it yourself. Beach succeeds to mixed results. His film feels like a much weaker version of The Usual Suspects as his elusive Danny Noonan becomes sort of a Keyser Soze kind of character.
Ray Liotta delivers a strong performance, but haven't we seen him play this role countless times? I even liked some of the smaller roles played by Taye Diggs and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Probably the weakest of the whole cast is Jolene Blalock, who just seems to tread water in a role that should be enigmatic, luscious, and convincing.
She is the centre-piece of this whole entire film and she is just plain dull. They needed a stronger actress to play this woman who walks the fine line between black and white, both in race and her allegiance. This film would have been utter magic if an Angelina Jolie or someone of her caliber played this role.
