It doesn't tell us why the original calendar didn't just alternate between 29 and 30 days to perfectly sync with the lunar cycle. Improve this answer. I had always heard that Augustus added days to August so it would be as long as July. Apparently this has been debunked: en. Perhaps there is simply no reason. Maybe they decided to continue that status of February. This is just my theory though. Yes, that seems a plausible explanation.
