Love one another fervently : Holy living is incomplete if it is not accompanied by love. To be a Christian means to have a sincere love of the brethren , but we are encouraged to exercise that love fervently.
Love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again : Such love is only possible and only to be expected of those who have been born again by the eternal word of God. Again, Peter did not use the same wording for born again as is found in John 3; but he did use the exact same idea.
Through the word of God which lives and abides forever : We are born again… through the word of God. It also tells us to love one another. If the word of God is as Isaiah says it is — the word of the Lord which endures forever , then we are both obligated by it and empowered by it, to live out the kind of love and holiness Peter speaks of.
The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the LORD endures forever : Peter here quoted from Isaiah The word of the LORD certainly has endured. It has survived centuries of manual transcription, of persecution, of ever changing philosophies, of all kinds of critics, of neglect both in the pulpit and in the pew, of doubt and disbelief — and still, the word of the LORD endures forever!
He failed, and 25 years later the Roman Emperor Constantine commissioned a scholar named Eusebius to prepare 50 copies of the Bible at government expense. But somehow the corpse never stays put. Since this eternal, always potentially fruit-bearing seed is in us, we have both the obligation and the ability to have a sincere love of the brethren. Perhaps we could say that if we need more love towards others it begins with having more of the incorruptible seed set in our hearts and allowed to grow.
Through the word of God… Now this is the word : Some people try to draw a sharp distinction between the two Greek words most often translated word , which are the ancient Greek words rhema and logos. But here Peter used both words logos in 1 Peter and rhema in 1 Peter to refer to the exact same idea. The two words sometimes have subtle differences, but often not significant differences. And the beauty in the repetition of these words is that even when Peter failed Jesus by denying he knew Him, Jesus forgave his offense.
Since He took on human form, He understands our weaknesses and pardons our failures when we repent and turn back to Him. Pictured below: Peter denying Jesus.
After this restoration, Jesus gifted Peter back his identity, which was the most important thing about him—His belonging to God. Jesus reminded Peter of his identity and importance in Matthew , "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I am so grateful for my identity in Christ, and I am just as thankful that He forgives me when I mess up.
As stated before, our relationship with Christ should mature, and we should gain strength in combating the world and its pitfalls.
But how sweet it is that when we do fail, our Lord loves us enough to look into our eyes and tell us again to follow Him. Based on the numerous references to suffering and persecution in this letter, Peter likely wrote in AD 64, just as the persecution of Christians under Nero was ramping up. First Peter focuses on the importance of believers bearing up under unjust suffering yet continuing to live well 1 Peter In this way, 1 Peter might be called the Job of the New Testament, providing encouragement for the true believer to continue on in the way that Jesus has laid out for all His followers.
Peter maintained that this was the kind of true perseverance that God expects from His people. Living in close proximity to Jesus Christ for more than three years had provided the apostle Peter the best possible example of what it looked like to live in holiness amid a hostile world.
More than any other man who walked the earth, Jesus modeled that lifestyle. Peter therefore pointed his readers in the best possible direction, to Jesus Himself. This would include submission to authority—even unjust authority—in the government, in the home, and in the workplace. By rooting their perseverance in the person and work of Christ, believers can always cling to hope in the midst of suffering.
