A disturbing new trend has seen teenagers using "digital drugs". Share this:.

Posted by Tim Bingham on July 29, At first it seems like I am listening to vibrations that I can feel inside my head. A few minutes in, I am sceptical that it can do anything beyond that. I lie down and shut my eyes. I am calm I open my eyes after what feels like an eternity—it has been 15 minutes. The vibrations are stronger now. I get up abruptly. My foot feels cold. I touch it.

Panic-stricken, I remove my headphones and put my phone away. I am spooked out for the rest of the night, comparing the temperature of my feet obsessively. By morning, curiosity has washed away the horror. The subject of psychoactive drugs sparks scientific curiosity about the human brain and the marvel that is the conscious mind. Digital drugs are essentially audio files that generate binaural beats—an auditory illusion in the brain.

This is combined by the brain and it forms a new frequency called the binaural beat. These audios, too, are available online and can be considered calmer versions of digital drugs as they affect moods differently. Although there is some science backing the calming effects of binaurals, there is no supporting evidence for digital drugs.

I decided to try out the starter dose staying away from auditory overloads like ayahuasca and oxycontin , which is a shorter version of the hour-long tracks. The drugs on offer were acid, cocaine, ecstasy, and marijuana. Every track, it seems, has a base layer of beats that are barely perceptible over the other sounds added to it. The acid track had layers of mellow sounds interrupted by what seemed to be a recording of a radio conversation about going into space?

It was weird, but also strangely calming, and the talking actually did function in a way that made the experience more visual. The marijuana track, on the other hand, had a louder layer of white noise, almost to the point of being annoying. I stopped the ecstasy track mid-way out of surprise because I definitely heard a woman scream I think out of pleasure?

Overall, the experience was interesting. On the other hand, actual drugs are illegal and also dangerous, so I-Doser and its competitors seem to offer a pretty harmless experience.
